Surface water bodies called tanks were indispensable for Bangalore. Built at a time when the city was rural, these man made structures provided water for tank irrigation and cultivation of such crops as rice. Now that the city urbanizes what is the new role for surface water bodies? They obviously can harvest flood waters, they can recharge ground water, they are a biological rich and diverse space, they modify the micro climate and are wonderful recreation spot for concrete jungles.
