A Suitable Pump - Advice Required!

I have an open well that is around 35 feet deep. The water leval ranges from 5 feet to 30 feet depending on the season

The water has to be pumped over a distance of 500 meters to a tank that is about 20 feet higher than the well leval. Please let me know the following details

  1. What is the type of pump that is most suitable for the well
  2. What is the required horse power
  3. What should be the type of pipe used for the delivery line
  4. Do i require a reflux valve
  5. As the power source is also 500 meters away what should be the guage of the electric cable that has to be used

Thanking you

1. Dear Sohar,   A submersible

Dear Sohar,

  1. A submersible pump would be best for the well and it should have a discharge head of at least 25 mwc (metres water column). To overcome the depth of the well, the height of the overhead tank and friction losses in the 500 metres lenth of piping.
  2. The horse power (HP) for the pump depends on the dishcharge head in meters and the pumping capacity (flow rate) in litres/minute or litres/hour.   The flow rate should not exceed the yield of the well. As otherwise, overpumping can damage the well and make it unproductive.
  3. The discharge pipe can be of PVC or HDPE and the diameter should be the same as the discharge nozzle of the pump.
  4. A non return valve on the discharge line is necessary.
  5. The power cable specifications will depend on the horse power of the pump motor.

2. Dear Matsohar, For your well

For your well the information you have given is:

- open well  35 feet deep.

- the water level ranges from 5 feet to 30 feet depending on the season

The water has to be pumped over a distance of 500 meters,to a tank that is about 20 feet higher.

This is nearly equal to nearly 20 m of working head at 10% for safety and another 10% for other fittings such as valves etc.

this is equal to 24m maximum working head

  • What is the type of pump that is most suitable for the well-

Answer:   Open well submersible,

  • What is the required horse power-
Answer:  Open well submersible are available in a range of Hp starting for 0.5 hp and above, depending on the quantity of water you want pumped per hour, you need to decided the HP., if initial cost is not an issue then ideal for the calculated head will be a 2hp , 3 phase pump
  • What should be the type of pipe used for the delivery line

Answer ideally you would require a pipe with diameter of 50mm, but to reduce the head I advice that you go in for 65mm, PVC or HDPE pipeline for delivery, rated for 4 kg pressure

  • Do I require a reflux valve
Answer: It is always advisable to have at least one Non return Valve, and an air release valve on any pipeline that is of this length.
  • As the power source is also 500 meters away what should be the gauge of the electric cable that has to be used
To ensure that there is substantial current available for the motor to develop the required RPM, it is advisable that you go for a 4.5 sqmm copper cable.
This assembly should deliver nearly 12000 to 15000 litres per hour, if lower discharge is acceptable then 1 hp is also acceptable and the cable required along with the pipe diameter could all be of smaller rating, Pipe 32mm, cable 1.5 sq mm
Hope fully all your questions have been answered, if you require more specific answers you need to give more information such as tank size , and the quantity of water you like to pump per hour.
With Kind regards

3. Dear Matsohar,   For every

Dear Matsohar,

For every 200 rm, calculate 1m vertical head. The extra head shall be 2.5-3m.

Total head shall be 35 feet (10m) suction + 10 feet (3m) line losses + 20 feet (6.5m) vertical head + residual head 10 feet (3m). You may buy a pump giving you a head of 23-25m head minimum.

Your question looks to be more fundamental.  Taking advise and executing will be a difficult task unless you have some average knowledge on what is the cause and effect on your actions.  or otherwise you should have some experience.  The material provided in the reply might have given you some seed for your knowledge.
For practical effect and to be cost effective, I advise you to take the consultancy service of an irrigation engineer or hand over the task to some commercial firm who execute ;professional tasks on water supply.

5. What is the type of pump most suitable for an open well?

I have an open well that is around 30 feet deep. The water level ranges from 5 feet to 30 feet depending on the season. The water has to be pumped over a distance of 100 meters to a 1/2 acre agriculture land.

Please let me know the following details:

  • What is the type of pump is the most suitable for the well?
  • What is the required horse power?
  • What should be the type of pipe used for the delivery line, do I require a reflux valve.
  • What will be the average cost of the pump?
