Minimum TDS Level : Setting TDS Levels on RO Systems

Recently as a salesman was giving a demo on a RO system, he told that the TDS level will be reduced to 10. Is it a safe TDS level or all the minerals will be removed if it is very low. But i read somewhere that the ideal mineral water should have a TDS level atleast of 150. What should be the minimum TDS level for the drinking water and what should be the maximum? Will the RO systems allow us to set the required TDS level?? If so what should be the thumb rule used to set the same?

You can not SET  the TDS level on an RO plant/unit.It will remove approximately 95% of the TDS in the water that is treated by the RO.

The TDS level of 10PPM is not at all reccmodable for drinking.The desirable level of TDS as per Indian Standard is 500 ppm. Kindly check the TDS of your input water, if it is upto 500 ppm, R.O. treatment is not required. however if you are interested in  R.O. you should go for R.O. with Nano Filteration Membrane which reduces TDS upto 50%.

4. Solution for increase RO water TDS of drinking water

Hello Sir,

As our tap water is already treated by municipal corporation and by making RO filtration to this tap water, the water now has a very low TDS (upto < 50ppm) which is not recommended for drinking. I have mineral salt powder to increase TDS of RO water. It increased the TDS of water which is healthy for drinking and it also makes the water sweet in taste.

Dilution: 5 grams in 25 liters of water. Product is approved by FDA.

5. Why is packaged drinking water TDS below 30 ppm?

I can understand your comment. But why does packaged drinking water products always keep TDS below 30 ppm?

7. You need to intall use both RO with UV

UV will only remove bacteria from your water, you must use RO with UV.

8. UV filter is only good for pretreated water

UV filter is only good for killing bacteria and virus, so this is suggested only for pretreated water usually supplied by municipal corporations.

For borewell water TDS is too high so you need both RO+UV to make it drinkable. The RO system will bring down TDS to about 100 which is usually what Bislerli has ( have tested when RO technician came to my home). Usually RO unit is sufficient for borewell water (to clean it and lower TDS) but for added safety it is good to opt for a RO unit which also has a UV filter.

9. TDS should be in the range of 50 to 400ppm

TDS should be in range of 50 to 400 ppm. It is desirable as it contains active minerals essential for normal body growth and function.

While Seetha has given correctly the provisions of the consumer act which enable you to take Kent to court, an important point is whether their advice that you must go in for an RO is in writing or was it told only verbally? If it is not in writing, Kent may very well deny having given that advice and say it was done purely on the request of the customer, they may say that you told them that your water has too much of salts and you want that to be reduced. How will you rebut this?

I am using RO system to get water with optimal TDS. Earlier it took 20 minutes to get 15 litres of water when the incoming water contained 150-200 TDS. Now, the source has changed to tube well containing 1300 TDS and my RO system takes 2 hours to have the same quantity of water.

As per the Guidelines for drinking water quality third edition volume-1 recommendation  brought out by WHO Geneva-2004 , chapter-10  acceptability aspects para Hardness page 215 - the taste  threshold for the calcium ions is in the range of 100-300 mgl,depending on the associated anions and the taste threshold for magnesiumis probably lower than that of calcium. In some instances,consumer tolerate water hardness in excess of 500mg/lit no health based guideline value is proposed for hardness in drinking water.

Recently I purchased Aquaguard SENSA SMP+ and it automaticly adjusts the TDS of the water to around 100 ppm with the help of Sensor which is provided in the collection tank after purification through either RO/UF and followed by UV.

I also tested with external TDS meter and found the TDS is around 100 ppm and TDS in the input water to the RO system is around 350ppm.

Even after RO filteration the TDS is 100 ppm, should I go for other filtration process which will give TDS 30 ppm system.

You have a good TDS level, which is best according to me. In my house in Kerala the TDS is 38 ppm & in Chennai its is 1200ppm ,where I have used RO to bring it down to 70 ppm.

Just boil your water & consume it,no need for any purifiers. If your willing to invest you could go for an UV or UF filters, no need for RO technology & adding of external minerals.

I am in this field of water purification and there are government standards for TDS,but they are ideal situations. A tds level of 150 - 120 will taste good for drinking.

In my experiance water with about TDS level 220 is good and even after boiling there are white spots it is bcose of temporary hardness water softeners will do and this water is good for drinking.

For you there is no need for RO technology which is a water intensive purification process, the yield will be in the ratio of 5:1.

34. Ideal TDS is upto 500 ppm

I strongly object to your very misleading statement that the TDS of drinking water should be between 100-500m and anything above 500 or below 100 will cause harm to one's body.

The standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards very clearly states that potable water should ideally have TDS upto 500 ( not from 100 to 500) and also say in the absence of this quality, water having upto 2000 TDS can be consumed. The RO system manufacturers are misleading ignorant and people that even if the TDS is, say 350,it should be reduced to below 100 and there is another category of chaps who offer s salt to increase the TDS again!

38. Drinking boiled water is the best

I am sorry about your baby son. I do not use any so called RO/A guards/other gadgets for my water purification at home. For last 20 years, my wife has been boiling part of the incoming fresh water (which comes for 2 hours in a day), for our drinking purposes. We have never had any sickness in our home for many many years.

Of course it is laborious and time consuming. After boiling, the water has to be filtered with a very fine cloth (four folded). Five liters a day is enough for four adults in our home. Of course the stainless steel vessel (dekchi) soon gets coated with scales and leftover TDS and that has to be removed from time to time.

Trust me there is nothing better than drinking water after boiling. This is accepted by the gadget manufacturers as well.

You don't have to worry. The safe limit is 500 ppm for TDS. Make sure your water is treated with a filter and disinfectant using  UV. RO is not a must for you.

Max acceptable level for drinking water is 500 PPM. I keep it at 40-50PPM at my home and water taste is very good. I would suggest you to keep around same. Very low level below 20PPM gives bitter taste.

This is my experience,

Few days back, Eureka Forbes & Kent sales & service engineers came to my flat and gave 3 different TDS levels, which is confusing.

Next day I asked Eureka Forbes service engineers to come with 2 TDS meters and again he gave 2 different TDS counts at the same time. How is that possible?.

They do not have answer when I asked the reason. They give some vague reading to customers and they do not have proper explanation as well as experience with the system. Simply we are believing their false readings and installing RO or UV water purifying systems.

We've to decide based on TDS level, if we should go with RO or UV systems. Did you ever give a thought about the ideal TDS level of water you are getting after installing water purification systems?

My request is to ask the service engineer to bring 2 or 3 TDS meters and check it at minutes interval

46. Water with 50ppm TDS is certainly safe for drinking

Attractive looking direct reading TDS meters are available in the market for a couple of thousand rupees but these are to be tested against a standard reference water sample whose TDS is known. If this checking for the meter's accuracy is not done, the readings will be off mark. This would explain the different readings from different meters of the sales reps reported by Sugata Mazumdar.

Taking advantage of the ignorance of laymen, sales chaps will offer RO plants even for water containing TDS within normal limits (upto 500 ppm ideal, 2000 if no alternative is available) to sell their products. Reducing TDS to 50ppm will only make the water taste flat.

Water with 50ppm TDS is not recommended for drinking is not correct. If this were true, the Buereau of Indian Standards would have given a lower limit also. There is no health or other risk except, as stated above, the water will taste flat for drinking.

Regarding Mr.Sanjay's report that a doctor had mentioned that water from a newly installed filter resulteld in someone getting typhoid and jaundice has no meaning, as we do not know what was meant by the word 'filter' and we do not know also what was the quality of the feed water.

47. Get the water checked in a laboratory for hardness & chloride

TDS of RO water is in between 7-14 ppm as committed by the sales engineer. If TDS level falls to such a low level, the usual industrial practice is to go for SS 304 (Stainless Steel) pipe in order to avoid corrosion.

Actually, when TDS level falls below 30 ppm the water becomes hungry and readily reacts with any substance in contact with the water

It is necessary to get the water checked in a laboratory. Main constituents to be seen would be the hardness & chloride levels. If both are within the specified limits, the water is safe for drinking purposes.
(This is my personal opinion)

The average tap water in America contains approximately 350 ppm of TDS although it is not uncommon for municipal or local water supplies to exceed this. If TDS levels exceed 1000mg/L, however, it is generally considered harmful to human health and should not be consumed.

49. TDS of 4 ppm, Is it safe for drinking? Should I change filter?

Dear Sir,

I had an Aquaguard RO system installed nearly 2 years back. Recently one of the executives from Aquaguard came to my house and told me that the water we were drinking had a TDS of 4 ppm. Is it safe for drinking?

He told me that 4 is very less for drinking and that we were not getting minerals and calcium from the water that we were drinking. He told me to change the filters of the system and that 40 ppm will be safe for drinking.

Please tell me if I should change the filters and whether whatever he told me is true or not. Waiting for a reply.

Pl see my comment in response to Mr.Babu's query on a similar problem. Water with TDS 4ppm is quite safe for drinking but may not be very palatable.

I do not see how with a different type of filters, you can get water with 40ppm and containing calcium and minerals. What is the basic source of water for you? Are you passing it through an Aqua Guard presently? If so, the feed water must also be having 4 TDS.

Ask the salesman what is the filter which will increase the TDS from 4 to 40.
