Troubleshooting Algal Bloom in Fountain: Cure & Prevention

We have a water body (Fountain) 250 Ltrs. The problem is that every time time i replace the waterbody with new water , within 3-4 days i see algae blooming around and water gets dirty with green patches. Is there a simple solution with which I can protect the water quality?

Is there any possibility of introducing some fish varieties which can take care off algal growth. This will depend on the type of water storage you have in the fountain.

Dear Ramesh,

Add bleaching powder or Sodium hypochlorite solution to fountain.

Thank you for your responses.

As suggested,, earlier i tried using some chlorine granules. Initially water appears to be clean but however water starts giving bad odor and it leaves stains and alge/green patches keeps coming back.

Is there way I can clean the water less frequently or add some readily available chemicals?

Dear Ramesh,

You appear to be replacing the dirty water with green patches of algae in your 250-litre capacity water body (fountain) with new water without thoroughly cleaning the fountain to free it from contaminants. The problem may be solved once for all by thoroughly cleaning the fountain through chlorination.

If the problem persists even after that, it means that there is something wrong with your water source. It is possible that your water is contaminated with nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural runoff containing fertiliser residues and septic system wastewaters. You have to then take effective measures to prevent contamination of your water source from the sources mentioned.

It is also possible that algae in your water produce Cyanobacterial toxins harmful for human health. They are best destroyed by chlorination.

Hope you will be soon relieved of the problem.

Dear Mr. Ramesh.

It is not clear whether water becomes green within 3 to 4 days or the algae starts growing on the surface of fountain.

A simplest remedy will be be controlled by dozing of either of chemicals
a. Copper sulfate (500 mg @ 2mg/l).
b. Chlorine in form of Sodium hypo-chlorite (10% strength) 5 ml (500 mg a Chlorine @ 2 mg/l)
c. Chlorine granules (5 g) if available.

Chemical a & c may be added intermittently and b has to be added daily.
If it does not work then a a small sand filter or a filter bag is recommended to install on the circulating line of fountain. Chlorine may dose as given above.

Dear Ramesh,

Generally when the surface of fountain is not smooth the algae blooming is more , so ensure sooth surface in the fountain if it made out of cement.

Secondly if there is facility of recycling of water exist in your fountain add about 0.3 mg/l of copper sulphate to it. Say less than half a gram is required to control the blooming .

You can also administer 1 gram of bleaching powder once in a week to keep the fountain free from algal growth.
