Effluent Pond Lining: HDPE Paper Thickness?Depth?:Advice

What should be the HDPE Paper thickness to be used for lining a treated effluent pond?

Size of the Pond required is 200KL. What should be the maximum depth of the pond?

Ashok Daulat Aher

Dear Ashok Daulat Aher,

Pond of 200 cum may be of size 10m x 6m x 3.5m + 0.5m free board. A polymer sheet of 1.5mmto 2mm thick shall serve the purpose. However, you may consult the manufacturer since soil strata, effluent type, HDPE material specifications and temperature shall play a role in selection of thickness.

Dear Ashok Daulat Aher,

For a 200cbm capacity, it’s ideal to have the depth as least as possible. Limit it to say 2.0m of at max 3.0 m not more, then a freeboard-0.5m is given so that the actual depth from the bern is say 2.5m or 3.5m max. The sizes can be circular or square say 10m by 10m or 8m by 8m.

a simple procedure is followed of letting some firm mud/ crushed brick rubble with bio-mass as binder on the bottom of the pond, the sides to be slopping at a gradient of 15 deg to 30 deg upwards, all bottom and sides surfaces well compacted. let it be seasoned on water filled for 3 to 6 months, then the lining HDPE-paper may be done, say 1.5 to 3.0mm thick should suffice...duly overlapped with bio-mass weighted soil at joints and binder-soils to keep firm the sheets and its joints firm at the bottom and sides.

When water is filled be very slow and avoid any turbulence and have a gentle and smooth flow...

By the way what is the purpose of the pond is it for re-use water...if for just storing and re-use by extraction by pump etc...its okay but if you want to use for recreation, man-movements in water then it is better to have bio-mass lining at the bottom, which is long lasting......

3. thickness of HDPE sheet for raw water storage tank

Dear Mr. Ashok sir,

Is the thickness depends on the depth of tank or volume of water.

We are proposing a 3000 Cum storage tank for a power plant. The maximum depth is 3.0m. Can you please advise the thickness of HDPE sheet.

Also, if there is any guidelines for selection of thickness of HDPE sheet for lining. please forward to me on mail ID:

Thanking you.

B.Naveen Kumar

Dear Ashok Daulat Aher,

HDPE paper thickness may be 500 micron. But Geo-synthetic membrane as a liner may be better.
The maximum depth of the pond should be restricted to 1.5 meter.

Dear Ashok Daulat Aher,

An average of 1mm to 3mm thick HDPE lining is recommended.
Size of the Pond required is 200KL. What should be the maximum depth of the pond?
The depth of pond should be between 1.5m to 2.5 m.
