Well at Low Level than Surroundings, Precautions?: Ratnagiri Dist, Maharashtra

My house and farm is at Village Lavel, District Ratnagiri, Province Khed (Maharashtra state). I am planning to dig a well in my farm. The chosen location is at lower level than surroundingsl. The well would be surrounded by a hilly (100ft high) area on three sides. During rainy season this area floods with water. What corrective measures are to be taken to avoid pressure of flowing water and possible damage to the shoring wall. Kindly advise.

From the hydrogeological point of view, a shallow dug well at a low elevation in valley portion gives good discharge compared to that located at a higher elevation. But, in view of the hilly nature of the terrain with steep slopes on three sides, the flood runoff can be high enough to inundate the well with transported sediment and damage the centrifugal pump installed.

If bore/tube wells are feasible and rigs are available locally to take up the work, a bore/tube well fitted with submersible pump is best suited to overcome the flood fury.

If there is no alternative other than a dug well, a restraining structure such as buttress dam, shear key, retaining wall, rock bolt or pile has to be constructed at a suitable location in the upstream to divert flood runoff and sediment load and thereby prevent their direct entry into the well.

Constructing an elevated concrete platform around the well with a strong stone masonry wall of say 2feet thickness can take care of the flood waters to a greater extent.

Give sufficient allowance for the anticipated flood depth while deciding the height of the platform and the parapet wall around the well. Use the excavated earth and stones to raise the surrounding area of the well and compact this sufficiently.

Also, ensure that the flood water is diverted near the well so that they safely discharge into low-lying areas located on the down stream side of the well.
