BOD,COD and foaming -- treating effluent

 

I am working in light Engineering (Bicycle manufacturing) industry, having Effulent tretament plant.

We are facing following probelm to meet required parameters of Pollution Control Board. The problems are as under -

1. BOD & COD and Oil & Grease parameters are high in treated water. How to reduce these.

2. We are using Caustic Soda in our plant for cleanin the Oil from surface of the material, which causes foaming in treated water, How to minimize this problem.

3. If any book or agency available near Gwalior kindly intimate me through mail.

For Oil and grease you can use skimmer tank to prevent oil and grease, check the skimmer tank continuosly and clean continuousy, for COD and BOD If caustic soda is more pH becomes more you can reduce the pH using acid and neutralise influent, it will be ok

Please find answers to the questions raised by you.

1. BOD & COD and Oil & Grease parameters are high in treated water. How to reduce these.

Basically, oil and grease too give rise to BOD and COD. All the same, since this is lube type of oil, removal may be difficult.

2. We are using Caustic Soda in our plant for cleaning the Oil from surface of the material, which causes foaming in treated water, How to minimize this problem.

Caustic soda is used as a part of the process. You will have to add acid anyway to cut the emulsion of lube oil for separation from effluent. You also have to add air injection to oxidize the iron content present in water. Addition of air and acid shall enable neutralization of effluent, oxidizing iron and removal of oils which in turn also reduces your parameters by default. Then, passing through pressure sand filter followed by activatedcarbon filter shall do the trick for you.

3. If any book or agency available near Gwalior kindly intimate me through mail.

Send me your treatment scheme alongwith tank sizes and effluent quantity and i shall advice you better. You do not need any book or agency to do this. From your query, i trust you shall be able to carry out the changes and turn around the ETP nicely yourself.

Dear Mr.Sandeep Srivastava,

For cutting and lubricant oil removal till now people are still using conventional practices of caustic soda and soap oil. These thing do not remove oil from the surface, it is hazardous for the users and also for floors and it will add up to the problem of ETP of excess of COD/BOD/Foaming etc.

We have bio products which will degrade oil from the surface totaly. Advantage:
1. Your surface will be totally oil free, slip less, which will save accidents due to slipery floors.

2. With the Bio-product since oil is degraded on the floors it will not be passed on to ETP so reduction in COD/BOD/Foaming.

3. Again cleaning water with our Bio product will carry microbes in to the ETP so it will further degrade oil in the ETP so indirectly this water will also help in reduction of COD/BOD. For degradation of oil in the ETP I will check up with our USA principals.

4. These are Environmental friendly Bio products.

I want few more information before I answer your question
1.What is cod value in your treated effluent?
2.What is the BOD:COD in your raw and treated effluent?
3.Where do you face the Oil and grease problem? I mean in which section of your effluent treatment plant?
4.Do you have an effluent treatment plant?
5.In your opinion what parameter is interfering in your treatment?

5. Fire fighting foam at the inlet increases BOD

We are using alum & DOPE for wastewater treatment in our ETP.  Everything is OK but problem arises when fire fighting foam enters our plant at inlet. This causes BOD of treated water to increase drastically. Kindly suggest what to do.
