Open Space RWH - Jalna, Maharashtra - Planning Advice Required!

I would like to seek the help of the experts in planning an open space rain water harvesting system. The system will be based on land being used for agriculture, 15 acres in total. The location is Marathawada area (Jalna Dist.) Maharashtra. Ideally would like to store about 10 lakh litres of water in a well or similar structure. Current plan is to grow soyabean and jowar. Please do advice me on the feasibility of my plan. Also do let me know if any changes have to be made.

In such case it is the micro-watershed planning that is important. The runoff generated from the catchment may be diverted to some storage pond and the same can be fruitfully utilised. Also possibility of recharging can be taken up.

If you want to store 10 lakh liters of water to use on a much later date then you could folow the same kind of RWH that is done in the desert areas of Rajhasthan. - TANKAS

Depending on the annual rainfal, a calculated area is flattened and compacted and the slope is so maintained where all the water that falls within this area moves towards one point, at that point is situated an inlet with gravel filter media and through this the water passes and enters a storage tank which is constructed below ground.

Naturally, this is very cost intensive and totally dependant on rainfall.

My advise would be to calculate the ammount of water you require during the dry seasons and make a collection tank of that capacity. During the monsoon period you could divert the rest of the surface runoff in to a shallow pit lined with plastic and use this water for irrigation.

To improve efficiency and reduce construction cost you could treat your land in such a way that the total slope of the land is towards this surface water collection area, and when you irrigate your field whatever little return flow is generated lands up back in the collection enters. There is always a certain amount of return flow component especially when one resorts to flood irrigation, When using drip irrigation this component may be negligible.
