Professional Advice Required : Evaluation of Water sample test results - Chennai

I have taken a water sample (2 ltrs) from newly dug Borewell (100 ft) near Hasthinapuram, Chennai and got the water sample test done by a Professional lab in Chennai.  They have given the following results. I would request if someone advice me if I can use this water sample for construction of a new independent house or not.

pH VALUE AT 25 DEGREE CELCIUS - 6.84

CONDUCTIVITY - 25 DEGREE CELCIUS - 3404

TOTAL DISOLVED SOLID - AT 180 DEGREE CELCIOUS - 2188 MG/LTR

TOTAL SUSPENDED SOLIDS AT 180 Degree Celcious - 2.7 MG PER LITRE

CHLORIDE - AS CL - 717 MG

SULPHATE - AS SO4 2 SQURE - 240 MG PER LTR

TOTAL HARDNESS - AS CSCO3 - 1260 MG PER LTR

CALCIUM HARDNESS - AS CSCO3 - 827 MG PER LTR

MAGNESIUM HARDNESS - AS CACO3 - 433 MG PER LTR

1. Suitability of water for construction

Dear Mr.Vijay Raghavan,

Water for construction needs to conform to IS:456-2000 which is the applicable Indian Standard. While most of the constituents seem to be within limits prescribed by this Indian Standard, the Chloride level of 717mg/lit is higher than the permissible limit of 500mg/lit for Concrete cement with steel reinforcement(RCC).I would suggest you get water with a lower chloride content(less than 500mg/lit as Cl) for use when mixing cement for RCC work.

2. Evaluation of Water sample test results - Chennai

Dear Vijay Raghavan,

From your questions I am not sure whether you want to use the water for drinking or for construction itself.

I would advice you not to drink the water: a conductivity of 3404 microS/cm is very high. From the analysis this seems to be caused by the presence of chloride and calcium + magnesium (total hardness). With 717 mg Chloride per liter, the water is salt. For Hardness Indian standard is maximum 300 mg/l (maximum 600 mg/l in the absence of an alternative source). Sulphate is also high (Indian standard: desirable limit 200 mg/l, limit in absence of alternative source 400 mg/l).

I do not know much about construction, but I suppose chloride may be the main problem (from the substances that you have tested), especially in steel-reinforced cement. You can try searching the internet for "cement mixed with salt water". This gives you a lot of hits.

3. Dear Vijay, The protocol

Dear Vijay,

The protocol under which construction water used is governed is IS 456:2000.
As per this code the limits of such water are
 TDS 3200 mg/l     - Organic 200mg/l
                                     Inorganic 3000 mg/l),
 Sulphate,                   400 mg/l,
 Chloride                     2000 mg/l (for PCC)
                                      500 mg/l (for RCC)
pH,                              Not be less than 6.0

4. Evaluation of Water sample test results - Chennai

Dear Sir,

As informed the above experts, the Chloride is higher.   Please also take care of the tubidity of the water while mixing with Concrete.

You can mix your bore well water with any soft water or with the Corporation supply water and change its suitability for your construction, provided the authorities permit after collecting the necessary fee.

Dear Sri Vijay Raghavan,

As per the report provided, bore well water has very high hardness and chloride, much beyond the BIS limits specified for potable water.

Further there are few health related chemical parameters, which need to be tested.
For example, fluoride, nitrate etc.

I think you should get the water tested either at or by laboratories approved by Tamilnadu Water Supply and Drainage Board; one can access details from the website on quality assurance (http://www.chennaimetrowater.tn.nic.in)

For specific addresses of the laboratories in Chennai, you can contact, Dhan Foundation, Chennai. Tamil Nadu.

6. Suitability for Construction

Dear Vijay ji,

As I have also advised you telephonically this water is not suitable for use in construction work and the best method is the dilution with low TDS water to make it suitable.

Dear Vijay ji

you have not tested your water for total alklinity , it is one of the vital parameters for the suitability of water for construction purpose , it should be not more than 250 mg/l in a given sample .

you can contact me on -09868876602
